Lead the corporate engine room of the ‘Bushland Shire’
Join a collaborative, values-led executive team
Highly competitive remuneration package
Hornsby Shire Council is seeking an experienced leader to head its Corporate Support Division and shape the services behind one of Sydney’s largest metropolitan councils. Council serves around 152,000 residents across 460 square kilometres, with a workforce of about 500 permanent employees.
Hornsby offers the convenience of city living alongside pristine bushland and waterways. The Shire is growing, and Council is planning for the housing, amenities and infrastructure its community will need, from a sound financial base.
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, you will oversee Financial Services, People and Culture, Technology and Transformation, Land and Property Services, and Governance and Customer Service.
Key accountabilities
Set the Division’s direction so its services are responsive, reliable and aligned with Council’s priorities.
Lead budget development, financial targets, expenditure monitoring and statutory reporting to protect Council’s long-term sustainability.
Ensure systems and processes meet governance and statutory requirements, and manage legal, reputational, financial and safety risk.
Advance technology, data and property portfolios to improve productivity, customer experience and community returns.
Drive workforce planning, capability building and a positive safety culture, grounded in Council’s values of Serve, Trust, Respect and Innovate.
Contribute to the Executive Leadership Team, giving the CEO, Mayor and Councillors clear, timely advice.
Plan and manage change, communicating openly to build understanding and commitment.
Represent Council at meetings, forums and civic events, and build productive relationships with government agencies, industry and community groups.
About you
You are a values-driven leader who understands that good outcomes depend on people as much as processes. You will hold a degree in business, commerce or a related field (or equivalent experience) and a proven record in senior local government leadership.
What will set you apart is how you lead. You can bring technically strong people with differing viewpoints to a sound, timely decision, judge what is reasonable rather than ideal, and move the organisation forward in deliberate steps without dampening enthusiasm.
You will also bring:
A whole-of-organisation view that puts Council’s interests ahead of any single division.
Sound financial and commercial judgement, with the confidence to challenge proposals and find cost-effective solutions that fit the need.
A disciplined approach to governance and risk, with practices that stand up to audit and public scrutiny.
Clear communication that builds confidence with elected members, employees, regulators and residents, and turns complex matters into practical advice.
Calm, steady energy when priorities compete, keeping teams focused and positive.
Why join Hornsby Shire Council
Be part of a purpose-driven organisation committed to community, environment and service excellence. Make a tangible difference in a strategically important part of Sydney while shaping a culture built on ethical leadership, innovation and accountability.
